Counterfeit perfume is a big problem in India. Fakes turn up on marketplaces, at street stalls and even on social-media "sale" pages, and the best of them look convincing at first glance. A fake perfume isn't just a waste of money. It can also contain unknown ingredients that irritate the skin. Here is a practical checklist to help you shop safely, plus how OUTLUXE makes sure every bottle we sell is genuine.
1. If the price is too good to be true, it probably is
This is the biggest red flag. Genuine designer and niche perfumes have a fairly stable price range. A brand-new full bottle of a popular designer scent selling at 70–80% off, especially from an unknown seller, is almost never genuine. Sales and festive offers are real, but huge, permanent discounts on in-demand bottles are not.
2. Check the cellophane wrap
Most sealed perfumes come wrapped in cellophane. On genuine boxes, the wrap is tight and neat, with clean, narrow seams that are usually heat-sealed. Loose, wrinkled wrap, thick glue lines or bulky folded edges are warning signs. Some brands don't use cellophane at all, so this is one check among many, not proof on its own.
3. Look closely at the box
- Print quality: Text should be sharp, evenly spaced and correctly spelt. Blurry logos, typos and odd fonts are common on fakes.
- Cardboard: Genuine boxes feel sturdy. Thin, flimsy card is suspicious.
- Information: Look for an ingredients list, volume, manufacturer details and, for products sold in India, an importer or marketer label with MRP.
4. Match the batch codes
Almost every genuine perfume has a batch code, a short code of letters and numbers, printed or embossed on the bottom of the box. The same code is usually printed or etched on the bottle itself. The two should match. A missing code, a code that has been scratched off, or a box and bottle that don't match are serious warning signs. Some brands' batch codes can also be checked on independent batch-code lookup websites to estimate a production date.
5. Examine the bottle
- Glass: Genuine bottles are usually smooth and evenly weighted, with no bubbles, rough seams or uneven bases.
- Cap: It should fit snugly and feel solid. Lightweight plastic caps on a bottle that should have a heavy cap are a giveaway.
- Logo and lettering: These should be crisp and centred, not crooked or peeling.
6. Test the sprayer
A genuine atomiser gives a fine, even mist. Fakes often spurt, dribble or spray unevenly. The tube inside the bottle should be thin, clear and cut to the right length. A thick or visibly long, curled tube is a common sign of a cheap copy.
7. Look at the juice colour
If you know what the original looks like, compare. Fakes are often a slightly different shade, unnaturally bright or cloudy. Genuine perfumes should be clear with no floating particles or sediment.
8. Smell and performance
Fakes often smell harsh or overly alcoholic when you first spray them, and they fade or "flatten" within an hour. A genuine perfume develops over time, from top notes into heart and base notes. If a perfume that is known to last smells completely gone after 30 minutes, be suspicious.
9. Know your seller
Buy from authorised retailers or channel partners. A trustworthy seller will clearly show its business address, provide a proper GST invoice and be reachable if something goes wrong. Be wary of sellers with no address, cash-only deals or "no returns, no questions" policies.
