    Oud and vanilla, with smoke through it

    Smoked Oud & Vanilla is the Gulf formula that sells more bottles than any other right now — dark resinous oud sweetened with vanilla and pushed through a smoky, incense-like accord. Rich, warm and deliberately loud.

    This is a night fragrance and a winter one. It is at its best at weddings, at dinners and at anything festive, and it is far too much for an office in June. If you have been curious about oud but found pure attars too austere, the vanilla here is the way in.

    Apply to pulse points rather than to clothing, which can stain. Neck, behind the ears, inner wrist, inner elbow. Warm skin carries a fragrance further, so those spots project best.

    The difference is how much perfume oil is in the bottle. Eau de Toilette sits lowest and wears lighter, usually three to five hours. Eau de Parfum is stronger and typically lasts six to eight. Extrait de Parfum and Parfum are the most concentrated, and can last a full day on skin.
